ALDI and Trigo Recognized for Outstanding Technology at Joint Autonomous Store
Trigo was recently recognized, together with our partners, discount giant ALDI Nord, with the Retail Technology Awards Europe (RETA) award for outstanding technology solutions. We are very proud to power ALDI’s store of the future, and thrilled to be recognized in the Best AI & Robotics Application category for ALDI’s Trigo-powered 100% autonomous store in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Michael Gabay, Trigo’s co-founder and CEO, said that Trigo will continue to perfect its computer vision system and work with ALDI and other leading global grocery retailers to bring cutting-edge innovation to the sector. “AI-Powered and fully automated digitized stores transform the retailer’s revenue and cost structure,” he said. “We are particularly proud to work with ALDI Nord, who invented the discount business model and have been at the forefront of grocery retail innovation for nearly a century.”

Since it introduced the discount retail model, ALDI has been on a continuous mission to innovate and reinvent it, with an emphasis on optimizing efficiency and improving customer experience and the shopping journey, all while adhering to competitive pricing.
ALDI’s emphasis on innovation has led it to partner with Trigo to deliver a truly friction-free autonomous store experience. ALDI and Trigo’s first joint store opened in July 2022, equipped with Trigo’s advanced computer vision system that lets customers enter the store and, using the ALDI Shop & Go app, pick their items and walk out without stopping at the checkout. Products at the store are tracked by shelve sensors and ceiling cameras, as part of a privacy-by-design system that protects shoppers’ identities and privacy in compliance with the strictest European data protection regulations.
“What we are testing here could be the ultimate translation of making shopping as easy and quickly as possible,” Jan Oostvogels, ALDI Nord CEO, said at the time of the store’s opening. “In this project, we are not only following the innovation but we are putting it one step further, what for some people might be the far future. To do this as a discounter strengthens even more our will to take a step ahead of many others. Making shopping easy.”
This is the second year in a row that Trigo has won a RETA award, after winning Best In-Store Solution in 2022 for its work with Netto Marken-Discount, opening the discount giant’s first hybrid checkout-free grocery store in Munich.
“With ALDI Shop & Go, we have developed a concept that brings together the discount idea and computer vision technology – always with the aim of making shopping as easy as possible,” said ALDI CTO Sinanudin Omerhodzic. “Data drives change and our value chain, and the company that has the best command of the data in the future will be the market leader.”
So what’s next for ALDI and Trigo? The partners continue to collaborate to bring retail innovation to market and advance shoppers’ experience and the in-store shopping flow.
